Choosing a city: how NRIs think about Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi NCR
The best city depends on why you are buying. Family base, rental income, a retirement home and a long-term investment each point in different directions. This is a framework, not a ranking.
Questions to ask first
- Will a family member live there, or will it be rented?
- How close are your relatives and your own hometown?
- How long a commute is acceptable from the job hubs?
- Is the area served by metro, airport and good schools?
How the city regions differ
- Bengaluru: a technology city with strong demand for apartments near the main job corridors.
- Hyderabad: fast-growing western and financial district areas with a lot of new high-rise supply.
- Pune: a mix of IT corridors and green, lower-density areas, with many weekend-home options nearby.
- Chennai: established southern and OMR corridors, with a steadier pace of change.
- Mumbai region, including Navi Mumbai and Thane: the most expensive market, with new supply moving to the extended suburbs.
- Delhi NCR, including Gurugram, Noida and Greater Noida: a wide range from luxury floors to large township projects.
